What Does a Hawaiian Look Like?
Nick VericellaHawaiʻi Island Rancher
Owner of Puʻu Pale Ranch—Waimea, Hawaiʻi Nick Vericella was born and raised on the island of Oʻahu and graduated from Kamehameha Schools. Often called "the haole" amongst his peers, growing up wasnʻt easy for someone to tell if Nick was Hawaiian, especially if you were to base your understanding on the way he looks and talks. Even though he has been criticized by his peers because of his appearance, his Hawaiian comes out through his actions. A second-generation rancher, Nick is continuing the practices and traditions taught to him by his grandfather which taught him to be genuine with all living things and also to be aware of your surroundings and the impact that you have on them. Through his hard work, Nick Vericella demonstrates an ʻōlelo noʻeau which says "E ho‘ohuli ka lima i lalo," which translates to "Turn the hands down." This is said of when the palm of the hands face down they are put to work.
